True Blood Season 3 Steps It Up

Season 3 of  the true blood series has reached a level of greatness that has me literally cheering every time I watch it.  Every episode seems to have been action packed and full of entertainment overload.  I'm not ashamed to admit that some of them had me screaming in frustration, or with laughter. If you are familiar with television series in general, you know that a lot of shows start to lose their focus and momentum around season 3.

Not so with true blood, and I'm glad the writers have managed to avoid that pitfalls.Season 3 ended with the cliffhanger hinging on Bill's mysterious disappearance after he proposed to Sookie. Although I really hate cliffhangers in season finales, I can understand their purpose. This time I didn't mind it as much, since the reason for Bill's disappearance was handled really well. This season is also beginning to address some of the lingering questions left over from season 1 and 2. Like the real reason behind Bill's moving to Bon Temps and Eric's dark history.  The introduction of the villain is very fluid; Russel Edgington and his lover Talbolt are both hilarious and insane.

I think the writers wanted to shine a light into all the dark corners of the people of Bon Temps. It is a great study on the good and evil sides of people. Sam the soft hearted pushover gets to show his other side, as does perpetual victim Tara and her crazy cousin Layfayette. We learn more about Sookie's history and watch her struggle with her own darkness as well as her strange relationship with Bill. It's not that these characters were one dimensional before, but they were close to being typecast by familiar character devices. Now everyone is battling inner demons and more than the demons outside.

That makes it impossible to predict what they will do next. The true blood writers have effectively turned everything on it's head in order to keep the viewers on the edge of their seats. I'm already anticipating the excitement of season 4 of the true blood series. I wonder how they will manage to top this season?
